March 6: Te Papa

This morning, after having coffees and watching the city come to life below us, we return the rental car and head to Te Papa, the incredible (free) museum of NZ history and civilization. Beautifully laid out in a modern building on the wharf and occupying 6 full floors, it contains exhibits of animals, plants, geology, Maori artifacts, early British settlers, pottery and visual arts.

In between hours at Te Papa, we lunch with D'Arcy and Andrea Smith and their children Logan and Sierra, who we had met in Seattle. Andrea is Laura Tutt's sister, who we know from back home.

At an internet cafe later that day, the young store manager summed up Wellington-ites take on living in a city perched on hillsides in a "highly likely" earthquake zone. Something like: "I really don't worry too much, cuz if we have the big one, I'll most likely die, and if it's not the big one, who cares?" Sort of a friendly fatalism.

Some tasty Malasian food for dinner, then back at the pad, we watch, appropriately, Alice in Wonderland, and the wind keeps whistling...
