March 17: Bird Canons and Gas Bangers
Bak! Boom! Bang-bang! Thak-thak, thak!!
Grapes are almost ripe, and the birds sure know it. Not 5 seconds go by without a set of blasts from one of the wineries (and there are at least 50 in the Blenheim-Renwick area so it's sorta like around the 4th in good ol USA). The latest keep-away technique employed is gas powered discharges, set on a random timer or mounted on back an ATV driven around randomly by some lucky employee. Of course, the birds learn quickly, and consider the start of "bird canon and gas banger" season to be the dinner bell. They love the dark red grapes, esp. pinot noirs. We have seen acres of Re-may wrapped rows of grapes.
Today is another easy day, as we finish our circuit of Marlborough and return to Blenheim. Now to get Ellen ready to return to Seattle to prep for her spring term at Univ.of Wash. (someone's gotta pay for all the Sauvgnon Blancs going down!)
At Goodwill, we find a classy, plaid suitcase (for $4) with primitive wheels and also a couple cardboard bike boxes. On to Gina's Homestay and to plot out our BUI* route for tomorrow's winery tour.
*BUI = biking under the influence
