The air is muggy and misty from last nights precip, as we retrace our path back to Linkwater, and the climbs leave us soaked. Meet 2 other touring cyclists, looking way fresher than us. The 10 miles to Picton keep us high above Queen Charlotte sound, affording great views of the fjords. As we approach Picton, the south islands ferry terminus, we start to see more signs of civilization: homes cut into green notches, bobbing sailboats, tourists in rental cars gawking seaward. Almost ran into a lady walking her terrier on one shoulderless stretch.
Then over a saddle and we descend steeply into town. A road construction worker with a "viking beard" urges us onward with "only a few more turns, mate!" The huge Interislander ferry is loading cars, thousands of logs are piled awaiting export to China and young, eager backpackers clog the streetside cafes. Tonite we stay at the Sequoia Backpackers Lodge, complete with a huge chess set, ultra-friendly hostess and choclate pudding-for-all at 8pm.
We practise for St. Patty's Day tomorrow at the local Irish Pub (no bangers and mash tho!)
