Day 2 of the descent to Westport and the Tasman Sea. We follow the Buller River watershed, thru upper and lower canyons, in front of massive cliffs we can't see the top of, thru beech forests so thick the air is cold all day long, thru rock cuts covered in ferns, past hippie homesteads tucked in secret corners, past Hawk's Crag: a single lane roadway hand-chopped from a cliff, past Uranium Half-bridge and finally back to sheep country as the broad river reaches Westport and the sea after 62 miles. Wow, what an incredible day!! A postcard setting every 5km!! And some nice Auckland ladies took pity on all the red bites on our legs and gave us some sandfly spray as we chatted them up at a rest stop.
The Palm Court motel is complete: the hottest of showers, trimmest of milk for our tea, and a long hair flop-a-puss who is spending an hour on our front deck just cuz that's where the sunbeam struck...
BTW, beverages at lunch were a double-shot long black for Gary and a Freshup Crisp Apple Big Fizz for Rick. IOW, a DSLB with a FUBF (crisp apple). Speak the lingo, dude...
