February 19: A fine pair of New Zealand whines

Lead legs and stiff joints didn't get fixed by our nighttime dose of vitamin Ibuprof, so we choose to dawdle all morning, lured by a fine breakfast shop and free Wifi til noon. (Here in NZ, use of internet, via internet cafes or wifi, costs up to $6/hour, so any op to get free use is worth it)

The whiners finally do get off, in the now heat of the day, just in time to see some local cricket (game, not chirper) in the park. Uphill, of course, and we follow some lovely temperate jungle terrain around Ohiwa Harbour and sprawling oyster farms, before reaching the water (no dotterals in sight, so in we go). Legs are heavy, neither of us has any energy. Good thing we're only going to Opotiki tonite, and after 29 miles we reach the Backpackers hostel in town. Looks like our company for the evening are Volcker, a German ex-pat artist, who runs the place, Oliver, a 24 y.o. touring cyclist from Britain, and three young blonde ladies, hanging around town to pick kiwifruit. Been awhle since my hostel days!

An Irish pub in the small town serves some fine ales and fish 'n chips to close down the day.
On to the East Cape tomorrow!

  1. All this whining about the hottie weather! Waited until 11:30 am for the temp in LFP to soar into the high 30's before hitting the Interurban bike trail to Everett, hot tea and muffin at Carol's Cafe.

  4. news of the quake prompted me to check out your blog for the first time to make sure you were not in the vicinity, which it appears you aren't. wondering how the quake is affecting you and your travels and your perspective. you are both such good writers and observers of the world, your posts are truly enjoyable travelogues.
