February 22: OMG, Earthquake in Christchurch ^^//^^ !!!

Eleven hours go by in blissfull sleep. Rubbing salty, irritated eyes, we crawl out of our bunk...
Rotating stiff legs in pedalling-like motions, we creep the 5km to the Manaku Coffee shop in town for short blacks and flat whites and a load of fruit. You know what's next, for every bay means a climb out. In 85deg/85% hum loveliness, we face 3 steep climbs and descents, then a plateau of rolls before the short day ends at the lovely ENZ of the Earth guest house in tiny, rural Ruatoria @ 34 miles.

Jom and Lee, proprieters of ENZ, tell us the news of the 6.3 earthquake that, only hours ago, has hit the NZ city of Christchurch on the South Island. First reports are that hundreds will die and damage will be in the tens of billions of dollars. City services are crippled, and for all intents and purposes, Christchurch is off limits. We are glued to the TV reports all evening.
